China is the second biggest automotive market in the world and very important for BMW. The size and the dynamics of the market combined with customer specific demands are key reasons for a strong R&D presence. BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. is currently reengineering its entire organization to implement the R&D competency for complete vehicle development. A state of the art development process “from idea to product offer” is being implemented and staffed. As one of several focus areas, our R&D in China started to concentrate on New Energy Vehicle development.

The availability of qualified engineers from top universities adds to our strategy of localized R&D in China. BMW has already more than 500 engineers in China, whereof over 300 are in the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. It is planned to increase this number significantly. The joint ventures will double the number in the coming years.
